Hose Reel Cabinet vs Fire Hose Cabinet: Differences and How to Choose

Hose reel cabinet vs fire hose cabinet: who uses each, hose types and flow, combined cabinets with an extinguisher compartment, and how to choose for a site.

The short answer

In everyday Bangladeshi procurement, "fire hose cabinet" is often used for any red steel box containing a hose. Technically there are two different systems inside those boxes, built for two different users.

  • A hose reel is for first-aid firefighting by occupants. The hose stays connected to the water supply, keeps its round shape and can be pulled out and used by one person within seconds.
  • A lay-flat hose and landing valve is for trained teams or the fire service. It delivers far more water but must be fully run out, connected and handled by people who know what they are doing.

The right choice is set by your fire protection design and the occupants, not by preference. Most commercial and industrial buildings end up with a mix, often in combined cabinets.

Hose reel cabinets

A hose reel cabinet houses a drum with semi-rigid hose, commonly 19 mm or 25 mm bore and around 30 m long, permanently connected to the fire water supply through a valve. Because the hose holds its shape, water flows as soon as the valve and nozzle are opened, even with only part of the hose pulled out.

Strengths

  • Usable by trained occupants such as floor staff or nurses after brief instruction.
  • Continuous water supply, unlike a portable extinguisher.
  • Quick to deploy; one person can operate it.

Limitations

  • Low flow compared with lay-flat hose; intended for small, early-stage fires.
  • Water is unsuitable for live electrical equipment, so CO2 or dry powder extinguishers are still needed near panels.
  • The reel needs space: the cabinet must fit the drum and its swing-out bracket.

Bangladesh retail listings showed a fire hose reel at ৳10,400 and a hose reel cabinet at ৳16,400 (observed Bangladesh retail prices in Oct 2026 — project/bulk prices differ). See fire hose reels.

Fire hose cabinets with lay-flat hose and landing valves

This type houses a landing valve connected to a wet or dry riser and lay-flat fire hose stored on a rack or in a coil, with a branch pipe or nozzle. Lay-flat hose must be fully run out and charged before use, and the nozzle reaction at higher flows needs a trained, braced operator.

NFPA 14, commonly specified for standpipe and hose systems, groups them into classes: 2.5 in hose connections intended for the fire service and trained teams, 1.5 in hose stations intended for trained occupants, and systems that provide both. Bangladesh retail listings showed UL fire hose pipe at ৳4,400 for 1.5 in and ৳8,400 for 2.5 in (observed Bangladesh retail prices in Oct 2026 — project/bulk prices differ).

Strengths

  • Much higher flow, able to fight a developed fire.
  • Gives the fire service a connection on every floor, saving time laying hose up stairs.

Limitations

  • Needs training; not suitable for untrained occupants.
  • Hose must be inspected, dried and re-racked correctly after use.

Neither replaces portable extinguishers, which remain the first response for many small fires and the only safe choice on live electrical fires. See fire extinguisher types.

Combined cabinets with an extinguisher compartment

A combined cabinet puts several items behind one clearly marked front. A typical arrangement is a double-door cabinet such as the SFA 104 double door (1,500 × 500 × 750 mm, L × W × H), with a hose reel on one side and a landing valve or extinguisher compartment on the other.

Why buyers choose combined cabinets

  • One fire point per location: occupants learn that everything is in the same red cabinet.
  • Less wall space and fewer wall openings than separate cabinets.
  • Tidier corridors in hospitals, offices and shopping areas.
  • Easier inspections, because one visit covers reel, valve and extinguisher.

Points to watch

  • The extinguisher compartment must allow the extinguisher to be lifted out quickly without catching on the reel or valve.
  • Use extinguishers suited to the hazard nearby: for example, CO2 near electrical panels. Bangladesh retail listings showed CO2 extinguishers at ৳2,150–2,600 for 3 kg and ৳2,600–2,900 for 5 kg, and ABCE dry powder at ৳1,200–1,400 for 5 kg (observed Bangladesh retail prices in Oct 2026 — project/bulk prices differ).
  • Signage on each compartment door: "FIRE HOSE REEL", "LANDING VALVE", "FIRE EXTINGUISHER".
  • Pipe entry and valve positions must be agreed before fabrication.

For how many extinguishers a site needs, see how many fire extinguishers a factory needs.

Choosing by building type

BuildingCommon arrangementWhy
RMG and textile factoryHose reels on production floors, landing valves at stairs, extinguishers throughoutLarge floor areas, many occupants, high fire load of fabric and yarn

HospitalCombined recessed cabinets, often stainless steelCorridor width, hygiene and one clear fire point
Office and commercial buildingCombined cabinets at stair lobbiesOccupant first aid plus fire service connection per floor
High-rise buildingLanding valves on every floor with hose reels for occupantsFire service access at height

These are common patterns, not a design. Your fire protection engineer, or a qualified fire-protection engineering firm, should set the system to meet BNBC 2020 and the approving authority's requirements. See the BNBC 2020 fire safety overview for context.

Buying tips

  1. Start from the design: list which locations need reels, landing valves and extinguishers.
  2. Size the cabinet from contents, not the other way round; ask for a layout drawing.
  3. Choose MS or SS by environment; powder-coated MS for most indoor areas, SS for hospitals, food areas and damp locations.
  4. Decide surface or recessed mounting early with the architect.
  5. Specify doors, locks and signage for each compartment.
  6. Ask whether the price includes equipment or the cabinet only.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a hose reel and a fire hose?

A hose reel uses semi-rigid hose on a drum that one occupant can use immediately. A fire hose is lay-flat hose, typically 1.5 in or 2.5 in, that must be fully run out and is used by trained teams at much higher flow.

Can untrained staff use a fire hose cabinet?

Hose reels are designed for occupants after basic instruction. Lay-flat hose and landing valves should be used by trained fire teams or the fire service.

Can a fire extinguisher be kept inside a hose cabinet?

Yes, in a combined cabinet with a separate extinguisher compartment. The extinguisher must be easy to lift out and suited to the nearby hazard.

How much does a hose reel cabinet cost in Bangladesh?

Bangladesh retail listings showed a hose reel cabinet at ৳16,400 and a fire hose reel at ৳10,400 (observed Bangladesh retail prices in Oct 2026 — project/bulk prices differ). Custom SFA 104 cabinets from Safety Plus are quoted per project.

Do I need both hose reels and landing valves?

Many commercial and industrial buildings do, because hose reels serve occupants on small fires and landing valves serve trained teams and the fire service. Your fire protection design decides the mix.
