Fire classes as they are labelled in Bangladesh

Most extinguishers sold in Bangladesh carry European-style class letters, often with an added "E" for electrical, which is common on units from Asian and Middle Eastern manufacturers. American (NFPA) labels use different letters for some classes, which is a frequent source of confusion.

Class (BD market label)What burnsUS (NFPA) equivalentTypical examples on site
AOrdinary solidsAFabric, cotton, paper, cartons, wood, plastics
BFlammable liquidsBDiesel, petrol, solvents, paint, thinner
CFlammable gases(included under B)LPG, natural gas lines, gas cylinders
ELive electrical equipmentCDB boxes, panels, motors, servers
F / KCooking oils and fatsKDeep fryers, canteen kitchens
DCombustible metalsDMagnesium, aluminium powder (specialist only)

So when a label says "ABC" on a US-listed unit, the "C" means electrical. On a European-style label, "C" means gas and electrical suitability is shown separately, often as "E" or a pictogram with a voltage limit. Always read the pictograms and the text on the label, not just the letters.

The extinguisher types you will find on the market

ABC / ABCE dry powder. The most common type. A fine powder (usually monoammonium phosphate based) that knocks down flames quickly on solids, liquids and gases and is non-conductive. It is messy, reduces visibility when discharged indoors and the residue can damage electronics, so it is not the best choice for server rooms.

CO2. Discharges carbon dioxide gas that smothers the fire and leaves no residue. Suitable for Class B and electrical fires; it is the standard choice next to DB boxes, panels and IT equipment. It is less effective on deep-seated Class A fires and its range is short, so it is a specialist unit, not a general one.

Foam (AFFF). Forms a film over burning liquid and also cools solids, so it covers Class A and B. Good for fuel stores, generator rooms with diesel day tanks and vehicle parking. Not for live electrical equipment unless the label specifically states a tested voltage.

Water and water-based additives. Plain water is for Class A only. Water-based agents with wetting or encapsulating additives, sold under names such as Cold Fire, penetrate solids better and some are labelled for additional classes. Check the label for each class and electrical rating; do not assume.

Wet chemical (K-type / Class F). Discharges a solution that cools burning oil and forms a soapy layer that stops re-ignition. This is the correct portable unit for kitchens and canteens.

Trolley (wheeled) units. Large-capacity powder, foam or CO2 units on wheels, for warehouses, fuel areas, loading bays and generator yards where a bigger fire is possible.

For gas fires, the safest action is to isolate the gas supply. Powder can knock down the flame, but if gas continues to escape it can re-ignite or explode.

Place extinguishers on escape routes and close to exits, so a person can tackle a small fire with a safe way out behind them. For a full count method, see how many fire extinguishers you need.

How to check an extinguisher before you accept it

  • Label: classes, pictograms, agent, capacity, operating temperature range and the standard it is made to (for example UL listing or EN 3) should be printed clearly.
  • Pressure gauge (stored-pressure powder and foam units): needle in the green zone. CO2 units have no gauge and are checked by weight.
  • Weight: weigh a sample; underfilled units are a known problem with low-priced stock.
  • Manufacturing date and serial number on the body or label.
  • Safety pin and tamper seal intact; hose and nozzle undamaged.
  • Body: no dents, rust or bulging; welds even.
  • Documents: test certificate or listing reference for the model.

After installation, carry out a monthly visual check and an annual maintenance by a competent person, and follow the refill and hydrostatic test intervals in NFPA 10 and the manufacturer's manual. Our procurement checklist explains which documents to request. To order in bulk, use request a quote.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between ABC and ABCE extinguishers?

Both are dry powder units for solids, liquids and gases. ABCE labelling explicitly shows suitability for live electrical equipment (E), which on US-style ABC labels is already covered by the letter C.

Which fire extinguisher is best for a home or small office in Bangladesh?

A 2–3 kg ABC or ABCE dry powder unit covers most risks, with a small CO2 unit near computers or the main DB box. In a home kitchen, a fire blanket or K-type unit is safer for cooking-oil fires.

Can I use a CO2 extinguisher on a cotton or fabric fire?

It can knock down flames, but CO2 does not cool or penetrate deep-seated fires in fabric, so the fire may re-ignite. Use water-based or ABC powder units for Class A materials.

Why should water never be used on cooking oil?

Water sinks below burning oil, turns instantly to steam and throws burning oil out of the pan, spreading the fire. Use a K-type wet chemical extinguisher or a fire blanket.

How often do extinguishers need refilling?

Refill immediately after any use, even partial, and whenever the gauge or weight check shows loss. Otherwise follow the maintenance and refill intervals in NFPA 10 and the manufacturer's instructions.
